The 22nd Annual Adventure Education Conference was held on Friday, November 7th 2014 at Brevard College. Area college outdoor education programs and members of the public were in attendance for what has become a fall tradition in the regional outdoor community. Several local outdoor companies ranging from camps & adventure programs to outdoor retailers and educational organizations - including Landmark Learning - set up exhibitor booths. Over 15 outdoor professionals provided interactive presentations on a range of topics related to outdoor education. Landmark Learning faculty Jon Lowrance presented on “Making the Call: Decision Making in Emergencies.” This talked pulled from content found in courses offered at Landmark including Swiftwater Rescue, our Emergency Medical Technician course and NOLS Wilderness Medicine courses as well as theory and published literature on decision making in emergencies. “It’s crucial that outdoor guides develop keen decision making capabilities,” Jon offers. “Learning how to stay calm in an emergency and harness key leadership, teamwork and communication techniques can help outdoor guides provide critical interventions effectively for victims, patients and other members of a group during an emergency.” Thanks to all the students, members of the public and colleagues in the outdoor industry who stopped by the Landmark booth and who helped put on this amazing conference! We can’t wait to see y’all at next year’s Adventure Education Conference!
