Reaching “New Horizons” – Wilderness Lifeguarding In Maine
I just got back from teaching another Wilderness Lifeguard course just north of Bangor, Maine! We had a group of great students from New Horizons therapeutic camp and a wicked beautiful remote site on MUSHQUASH Lake. Conditions were a little rough with breezy, overcast skies and a high of 60 F. The students were strong swimmers and many of them had previous lifeguarding experience. All of the students were psyched about how applicable our course was to their work. They all felt that our course fit better with their risk management plans than a pool taught lifeguard course. I am looking forward to two of their staff joining us for our instructor course in September. This was the first course I have taught where a shelter and small mound fire was set for breaks! That was cool.
