April 2012

"Broken Leg Syndrome" seems to strike our students repeatedly during our classes!

Scenario - Whitewater kayaker "boofs" a 20ft waterfall, has multiple injuries, possible spinal injury and hypothermia. (PS: It was snowing the day before this photo was taken!)

A wild bunch of medical professionals joined our April EMT Intensive students to add wilderness medical skills to their bag of patient care tricks in our NOLS WMI  Wilderness Upgrade for Medical Professionals here at the Landmark base.

We always love the environment created by the combination of EMT's who just finished their training, mixed with Medical Doctors, Nurses,               working EMT's, Paramedics, Military Medics and Law Enforcement Officers.

What a cool discussion and practice group - everyone has something to offer and gain from each other!

Tonight is our always epic mock rescue.  The weather forecast is rain, rain and more rain.  So the things that could happen on the side of Ol' Smokey could get very exciting!

Updates to follow....

EMT Intensive students after a very successful automobile crash scenario. Most were rescuers and the ones with their pants legs cut open were victims.  The manikin was not hurt during the scenarios.

Another successful EMT Intensive here at Landmark!

14 students have successfully completed three weeks Landmark and WMI of NOLS education of endless hours of classroom lectures, numerous indoor and outdoor, day and night emergency response scenarios, and weekends full of EMS and ER shifts.

Everyone is exhausted, but very competent and have successfully put their knowledge to the final written test.  This now qualifies them to take their North Carolina State and National Registry EMT-Basic exams!

After the testing and during the EMT party, the students began reminiscing and sharing their stories from clinical experiences in the E.R. and EMS.  During their rotations, our students were able to care for critical patients during critical situations.  They now have an idea of how they will react to those kinds of situations for the next time.  These stories and experiences they will own for life!

These are the experiences that can't be taught, they have to be lived.  It is from this start, that knowledge has the opportunity to become wisdom.

Next week begins the wilderness portion of their W-EMT with a Wilderness Upgrade for the Medical Practitioner.  So our students better rest up this weekend, because they begin another intense week of training on Monday, full of wilderness scenarios converting their Urban EMT skills to the wilderness!

Thanks for being great students and we look forward to hearing about the lives you save as EMTs!

We’re now in the 2nd week of the 21-day EMT Intensive course at the Landmark Learning base in Cullowhee.

Our students have dealt with scenarios ranging from heart attacks to seizures to psychiatric emergencies and are excited to begin the trauma management curriculum.  Students began their clinical rotations last week and have already had several interesting experiences both on the ambulance and in the emergency room.

Scenario:  Flail chest and likely spinal injury.  Stabilizing the head and protecting the broken ribs section.

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds including outdoor education, military and law enforcement.  However, this April EMT course has been mostly filled by National Park Service employees.  One of the coolest things about teaching Landmark classes is getting to meet folks coming from such diverse careers and life experiences!

Today our focus has been on traumatic injury.  Here the students are working on a scenario treating a flail chest on a patient who broke multiple ribs in a fall from a rope swing.

More to come as our students make progress towards their Wilderness EMT!

Swiftwater Rescue Photo

Some adventurous souls braved the winter water, to learn Swiftwater Rescue!

Wake Forest University Outdoor Pursuits trip leaders (and a couple of their friends) joined instructors Eli Helbert and Jon Lowrance for a chilly but successful ACA Swiftwater Rescue course 24 & 25 March 2012. As the first SWR course of the year at Landmark Learning, students rose to the challenge of mid-50ºF air temps, 40-50ºF water temps, rain and wind to learn how to safely manage whitewater rescue situations.  Props to the students for staying so positive despite the stiff weather conditions! The Outdoor Pursuits trip leaders weren't the only WFU students on the Tuck that weekend, though:  up in the gorge another group of Outdoor Pursuits leaders were instructing a two-day kayaking course for WFU students. We wish our new ACA Swiftwater Rescue grads the best as they  prepare for a busy season of paddling instruction at WFU! Stop by and see us at Landmark Learning on your next trip to the Tuck! Kayak Group Photo

Justin Padgett and Rob Barham enjoyed teaching and swimming down the river with member's of SAU's Outdoor Leadership program this last week.  We were blessed with  beautiful warm weather and sunny skies for all three days.  That is quite unusual for our March coursework!  Students came with a good background in paddling and ropework allowing the instructional staff to demo and teach advanced techniques and run multiple scenarios.  What a great organized group of folks! We look forward to seeing you all out on the river.  Smiles and tip of the "Yak" to you all! Lightning Drills...

Sixteen outdoor enthusiasts, students and professionals joined us for a fantastic WMI of NOLS Wilderness First Responder course in Montreat, NC.
Pictured here are the students presenting their super-cool boards on Communicable Diseases after team-teaching this topic on the WFR course!

This course was unprecedented in the unfortunate cancelation of the night-time mock rescue scenario due to an impending lightning storm!  Often courses are beset by random weather conditions and these often contribute to the students learning.
If you can see lightning, it can strike you!  For risk management purposes, one common recommendation is that when the time between lightning strike and thunder is less than 30 seconds, then everyone must get into a lightning drill position.  A lightning drill position is something to the effect of sitting away from each other within shouting distance, on closed cell foam pads, with legs crossed, under a uniform stand of trees, out of the ground water, and away from single tall structures.
So, instead of getting struck by lightning, the instructors and students decided to use their training and "head indoors when thunder roars."  We spent the evening honing our improvised splinting and patient assessment skills in the shelter of the classroom as the storm put a beating on Montreat and the surrounding area.
Many thanks to the students for keeping spirits high and all their hard work towards making another fantastic WFR course!
