Broadstone and Appalachian State University

Broadstone parthers with Landmark Learning to offer certification courses
Wilderness Medicine Institute and Leave No Trace courses will be offered this fall

BOONE - University Recreation at Appalachian State University has partnered with Landmark Learning to expand education and training opportunities in the field of outdoor recreation and education.

Landmark Learning is an authorized Teaching Institute for the N.C. Office of Emergency Medical Services and a provider for the National Outdoor Leadership School’s Wilderness Medicine Institute. The company will offer medical and outdoor education certification courses beginning in September at University Recreation’s Broadstone facility. 

The medical courses to be offered are: Epinephrine Administration, Wilderness First Aid, Wilderness First Responder and Wilderness First Responder Re-Certification. Additionally, Landmark is a provider for Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and will be offer Leave No Trace Trainer and Leave No Trace Master Educator courses.

University Recreation, a division in Appalachian’s Office of Student Development, operates Broadstone, which is a 35-acre property within located a short drive from the university in Valle Crucis. The university has owned the property since 1961, when the former summer boy’s camp, known as Camp Broadstone, was purchased from the camp’s operator who was a former a high school and university coach.

Broadstone provides recreational space for students and is a site for outdoor education training for students and the community through its alpine tower, group interaction course, high ropes course and other facilities.

Landmark Learning, based in Sylva, is a nationally recognized accredited teaching institute through the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET). Owner Justin Padgett is an Appalachian alumnus and a past Camp Broadstone counselor.

The company also offers certification courses from the American Canoe Association and Starfish Aquatics Institute.
